POLICE —
SOUTH WEST DISTRICT
967. Hon ADELE FARINA to the
Attorney General representing the Minister for Police:
(1) Will the
minister confirm a recent announcement that 38 additional police officers will
be allocated to the south west police district in 2016, and is this is a
permanent full-time equivalent increase for the district?
(2) Of the 38 additional police
officers, how many will be —
(a) detectives;
(b) auxiliary officers; and
(c) police officers?
(3) Where in the south west will the
38 additional police officers be located?
(4) Will Busselton Police Station
get the six additional police officers it needs?
(5) A statement
attributed to the police commissioner in the Bunbury Mail of 9 September 2015 indicates that the additional 38 police
officers includes additional police officers already allocated to the south
west district since 2000; is this correct?

On behalf of
the Minister for Police, I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1) The recent
announcement of the allocation of an additional 38 police officers in the south
west district forms part of the Liberal–National government's
550 growth program. Deployment of the officers will increase the full-time
equivalents in the south west district. Deployment will commence early next
year and will be completed by 30 June 2017.
(2) The
additional 38 officers will comprise nine detectives, 26 general duties
officers, two prosecutors and one youth crime prevention officer.
(3)–(4)
Western Australia Police advises that four detectives will be deployed at
Busselton Police Station. However, due to operational sensitivities, specific
information relating to the deployment of 29 police officers cannot be
released. Resources are principally allocated at a district level and district
superintendents deploy these resources within their district to provide the
best possible policing service to meet operational requirements and the varying
needs of the community.
Police resources are deployed
across Western Australia at the direction of the Commissioner of Police and his
executive. The allocation of staff to a particular district or subdistrict is
dependent upon a range of environmental and demographic considerations,
including, but not limited to, crime rates and population.
(5) No. These
are additional officers.
