Today’s announcement is significant for all Australians, but it has special significance for Western Australians as many of the servicemen and women soon to be deployed overseas are based at the Campbell Barracks in Swanbourne and, of course, at the HMAS Stirling naval base. These are the sons, daughters, friends and neighbours of the community of Western Australia. They carry with us our best wishes and hopes for a safe return. They leave behind families, and we think of those families at this very difficult time. Australia stands beside all nations concerned about the events of 11 September. This is a matter that must be addressed through improved security measures around the world and targeted military action. We stand beside those nations that are willing to take those steps to ensure a peaceful future and the ability to engage in trade, commerce, civilised tourism and communication throughout the world. Our defence forces have always acquitted themselves with distinction, and I have no doubt that they will perform with honour and bravery the task that we as a community have given them. I know that all Western Australians will join with me in expressing support for those servicemen and women who answer the call of duty during these very troubled times.
