Will the minister inform the House of the recent successes of our State’s police officers in combating crime in our community? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for Riverton for his question. As he is obviously aware, the Police Service has pulled out all stops in recent times to deal with crime in the community. Over the past few weeks, the Police Service has conducted a series of crime crackdowns in Northbridge and Fremantle in what is known as Operation Hard Drive 2, which is part of an ongoing metropolitan-wide operation. I announced the Fremantle operation today. The success of officers’ involvement is further evidence of the dividends paid by the Government’s operational policing commitment. The week-long operation in Fremantle involves some 80 police officers from the south metropolitan district. Once again, I inform the House of some spectacular results: 19 people have been charged with stealing; 97 people with fraud; 12 people with burglary and robbery; and seven with motor vehicle theft. The success in Fremantle is in addition to the results achieved by Operation Hard Drive 2 in Northbridge, where more than 60 officers were involved in a similar operation in which 117 people were arrested and apprehended, including 71 people charged with more than 100 offences, and 46 juveniles were taken off the street under the Child Welfare Act. This is the start of a new phase of crime fighting to target hot-spots and recidivist offenders. The Government is committed to high-profile policing. These ongoing operations will target the hot-spots and repeat offenders throughout the metropolitan area.
