Traffic Impact Studies are a valuable tool to ensure the delivery of high quality sustainable urban environments through the assessment of existing traffic volumes and movement patterns and applying a range of likely traffic generation levels for parking and trip rates.
Sustainable urban environments, such as Transit Orientated Development (TOD), place less emphasis on car bound traffic and a higher emphasis on the provision and use of alternative methods of transport such as public transport, walking and cycling.
The TOD strategy adopted by many global cities seeks to increase density around transport hubs like railway stations to reduce dependency on the car. Traffic Impact Studies are utilised to demonstrate how such developments are fully integrated with alternative transport modes while minimising any detrimental impact on the existing traffic network.
(2) The East Perth Redevelopment Authority Riverside Master Plan has been the subject of a comprehensive range of traffic and transport assessment reports to inform the vision for the redevelopment of this high profile urban area. The Traffic Impact Studies prepared for The Master Plan by Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) and Riley Consulting address a broad range of traffic and transport related issues including:
· Potential development yields and parking requirements;
· Anticipated traffic generation;
· Impact on external and internal road systems; and
· Integration with walking and cycling networks.
In addition to these reports the Authority's Design Guidelines for major redevelopment projects such as Riverside and The Link will require that a Traffic Impact Assessment be undertaken and submitted as part of every major Development Application.
