NATIONAL BROADBAND NETWORK — FEDERAL LIBERAL PARTY’S PLAN
I note that there are a large number of areas across Western Australia where access to broadband is not available or is very poor, such as in my electorate in the areas of Orange Grove and Wattle Grove. (1) Does the Liberal–National government support the federal coalition’s plan to scrap the national broadband network? (2) Why do the Liberals not agree that we need a twenty-first century broadband network in WA to diversify our economy and to take full advantage of our economic opportunities? (3) Given Mr Abbott’s announcement yesterday, has the minister been involved in any consultation about the location of the thousands of 10-metre-high reception towers that his plan will require throughout Western Australia? Mr W.R. MARMION

I thank the member for Forrestfield for the question. (1)–(3) As the member knows, this is a federal issue. However, my department has a small interest in broadbanding. We have one officer who liaises with the commonwealth on this issue. Indeed, the only interaction I have had, as the minister, was to go to the opening at Gingin of the laying of the broadband cable between Perth and Geraldton, which will be part of the Square Kilometre Array link to Perth. That is basically the only interaction I have had.
