Mrs Jessica Stojkovski
replied:(1)–(2) I thank the member for his
question and for his very strong advocacy around services for his electorate
and surrounding corridors. My predecessor in this role previously informed the house
about some updates to improve service delivery for the Department of Transport
at the driver and vehicle service centres. As we know, everybody wants to live
and work in WA. Who would not? But that has resulted in some significant
pressure on our driver and vehicle service centres. They have experienced a
significant uplift because of internal, interstate and international migration
into WA.In the 2023–24 financial
year, there were two million transactions across our driver and vehicle service
centres across WA. Building on the good work of the Leader of the House, last
Friday I went out to the Cannington driver and vehicle service centre to
announce a new trial for extended hours at Cannington, City West and Mirrabooka
DVS centres, which will commence on 30 June and run until 29 August. This trial
will provide an additional two hours a day at these three DVS centres. They
will be open from 7:15 am until 5:30 pm. Essentially, people can go there
before work or school or after work and school, and it will help to smooth out
the number of transactions throughout the day. This is an important step for us
to manage the transaction load at our DVS centres. These extended weekday
trading hours follow the successful Saturday blitzes that we had. After all of
these trials have been completed, we will look at how best to service across
the network, whether by Saturday blitzes or extended hours. All other metro DVS
centres will open as usual, trading between 8:15 am and 4:30 pm. As I said, once
the trial has concluded, the department will evaluate staff and customer
sentiment and feedback.I know the member is keenly
interested in the new Byford-Armadale—or Armadale-Byford, depending on
which electorate you live in, I think—DVS centre and I am really
pleased that we have announced our commitment to fund a $4 million election
commitment in this budget for the new driver and vehicle service centre in the
Byford-Armadale area. The funding will provide for consultation, planning,
design and delivery of the new community asset. The services that it will
provide will include learners' permits and WA photo card applications, theory
and hazard perception tests, practical driving assessments, interstate and
overseas driver licence transfers, vehicle and boat registration, transfers and
custom plates—one of my favourites. Currently, the Cannington and
Success driver and vehicle service centres service people from the south east corridor,
with one in five people travelling about 40 minutes to attend those centres
from suburbs including Armadale, Gosnells and parts of Serpentine–Jarrahdale.
This project follows on from the previous efforts that we have seen, including
new centres at Butler and Busselton and a dedicated driver assessment centre at
Joondalup, and the recruitment of extra driving assessors and staff. This is
another way that the Cook Labor government is "driving" efficiency
for Western Australians to better access services.
