POLICE OFFICERS —
WAGES
277. Mr P.A. KATSAMBANIS to the Minister for Police:
I have a supplementary question.
Given that the minister's government seems to believe there is no
difference between a level 4 public servant and a police officer who puts their
life on the line each day, when will the minister step forward and show some
leadership in supporting our police in their demands to get a fair wage
increase?

Thanks for the further opportunity,
member, because what I forgot to mention —
Mr A. Krsticevic interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Carine, I call you to order for the second time.
Mrs M.H. ROBERTS : — was
of course the work we have been doing on providing redress for our police
officers, something that in eight and a half years, members opposite promised
to do and never delivered. We have put the scheme in place and we are about to
deliver redress for those officers who were medically retired. We are further
working on changes that will be introduced shortly to recognise that officers
who are medically retired are not medically retired under the section 8
provision. Again, that is something members opposite promised to do but did not
deliver for police officers. It is just a nonsense. In answer to the specific
question, there is no new nexus created by
us. It is exactly the same position it was when members opposite were in
office. They made no effort to change it.
Mrs A.K. Hayden interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Darling Range, I call you to order for the first time.
Mrs M.H. ROBERTS : Members
opposite made no commitment to increase police wages. In fact, they had the
police budget going down and down dramatically over the forward estimates that
they popped on the table in December 2016. Do not come in here and pretend that
you care for police officers. You did precious little. In contrast to that, we
have been slowly but surely delivering for our police officers. We will then
deliver things like the body cameras and the protective vests. We are in the
process of delivering redress and we will deliver workers' compensation.
We will also restore some dignity to medical retirement process by not retiring
police officers under the provisions of section 8.
