Will the minister inform the House what steps the Government has taken to combat child abuse and domestic violence in our community? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

I thank the member for his question, for some notice of it and for his interest in policing and matters related to protecting women and children involved in domestic violence. Members may be aware that yesterday, as part of national Child Protection Week, I announced details of a highly specialised group of police officers who will be targeting child abuse and domestic violence. These officers will be in the frontline developing new strategies and programs to make our communities safer and more secure. Fourteen police officers will operate throughout the State to develop programs to combat these crimes. By the end of November, an officer at sergeant level will be located in each of 14 districts. It is a very important message to both the Police Service and the community that those officers will be at sergeant level. It is important that someone senior is dealing with this important area. This team will have an important role to play in stamping out the crimes that destroy too many young lives and too many women’s lives. This is an important government initiative that flows from the Gordon inquiry and our $75 million commitment to combat child abuse and family violence. Given that this is Child Protection Week, the Government has made a number of other commitments as part of that $75 million package that will involve the police. It will include nine new policing posts in Aboriginal communities and strategies to target on-line paedophile crimes committed on the Internet. The Government is also in the process of establishing a new video evidentiary unit for interviewing children at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children.
