LAW
AND ORDER — SENIORS' SECURITY
407. Mrs M.H. ROBERTS to the Minister for Police:
I refer to the minister's comments at the weekend
that —
''People are scared,
elderly people in particular, about home invasions, about violent and
unprovoked attacks on people in the street.''
(1) Could
the reason for this fear have something to do with the fact that there has been
a 48 per cent increase in attacks on the elderly under this government's
watch?
(2) Is this
the reason that the former Minister for Police was sacked from the portfolio?

I thank the member for the question.

In response to the Premier's comments on the weekend—he was
commenting about the concerns people have about home invasions—I have
been working with the police on strategies that we can use to engage with the
community on a number of levels in the area of helping elderly people fit
security devices to their properties to make them feel safer when they are in
their homes. In addition, we have been working on a policing response that may
involve an education campaign to make people more aware about how to make
themselves and their properties safer. This is obviously something of concern
to me as a minister. I believe that my role is to ensure that the police are
given the tools they need to be effective and to ensure that they deliver
effective policing, and as a minister, I am committed to ensuring they can do
that.
