FIREARMS
ACT — REFORM
1333. Hon COLIN de GRUSSA to the minister representing the
Minister for Police:
I refer to the
gun ownership reforms released for public consultation as proposed under the
Firearms Act review.
(1) Can the
minister provide the number of submissions that have been received to date as
feedback to the firearms bill consultation paper?
(2) Noting the
almost 10 500 signatures to date on the current extending consultation period
on the proposed firearms reforms petition, will the minister consider extending
the consultation period to three months?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question. The following information has been provided to me by the Minister for
Police.
(1)–(2) The Western Australia Police Force advises
that 4 240 submissions have been received as at 7 November 2023 .
Consultation on the proposed changes to the Firearms Act 1973 commenced in
November 2021. In the near two-year period before the release of the
consultation paper, more than 100 meetings were held with individuals,
organisations, key stakeholders and regional communities. I encourage
interested community members and stakeholders
to make submissions on the proposed reforms before the end of the consultation period on 14 November 2023.
