MUCHEA LIVESTOCK COMPLEX — SOUTH WEST REGIONAL SALEYARDS
(1) Can the minister advise whether the net realised and expected return from the sale of Western Australian Meat Industry Authority assets at Midland and Hazelmere, less the $54.54 million that is advised to be the cost of the Muchea livestock complex, will be in the order of $45 million? (2) If so, will this sum of $45 million, or the amount that otherwise represents the difference between the two sums referred to in (1) be devoted to supporting the capital cost of the strategic regional saleyards at Katanning, Mount Barker and the south west? Hon ROBYN McSWEENEY

I thank the member for some notice of this question. The minister has provided the following — (1) Estimates are in the order of this figure. The amount of residual funds from the dispersal of assets at Midland will not be known until the Midland saleyards are decommissioned next year. (2) The Minister for Agriculture and Food is aware of the deteriorating state of regional livestock sale facilities. He is consulting with all interested parties, and is seriously considering all the issues associated with this issue. A business case for assistance for regional saleyards, including Katanning, Mount Barker and the south west, is being developed, and the government will decide on the appropriate support mechanisms and level of financial investment. I think the former Minister for Agriculture and Food well knows that.
