FIREFIGHTING SERVICES
Mr R.F. JOHNSON

I thank the member for his question and for his very obvious interest in this wonderful old building. I am delighted that the old Perth Fire Station on the corner of Murray and Irwin Streets has been entered onto the state’s Register of Heritage Places on a permanent basis. I went to the old fire station about 15 years ago — Mr F.M. Logan : Did you slide down the pole? Mr R.F. JOHNSON : No, I did not slide down the pole, but I had a good look at it, and I think the member for Cockburn would do a good job of sliding down it! The old equipment at the fire station is absolutely fantastic. The station, built in 1900, was the first purpose-built fire station in Western Australia, and it was the largest and most comprehensively equipped fire station in Western Australia for almost 80 years. If any members have not been to the old fire station, I suggest to them that it is well worth a visit. It is a beautiful old building that houses beautiful equipment. It is possible to visit the stables—in the old days, the water tenders were horse drawn. I am sure that the member for Perth has had a good look around the station. Mr J.N. Hyde : Perth is a wonderful electorate. Mr R.F. JOHNSON : I am talking about the fire station. Has the member visited the fire station? Mr J.N. Hyde : What is the relevance of the question? Is the minister backing our beautiful new fire station? Let’s look forward: forget about the past! Mr R.F. JOHNSON : Let us talk about the wonderful new you-beaut fire station. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, members for Perth and Girrawheen! Mr R.F. JOHNSON : I am delighted that the new $11 million fire station on Wellington Street will soon be in service. Just as the old Perth Fire Station led the way in its day, I expect the new station to do the same. I visited the new fire station recently. I have to say that I was very impressed; it is a great and functional building. The amenities are state-of-the-art and the accommodation for firefighters, who work around-the-clock, is also first rate. This will be a great fire station. Ms M.M. Quirk : When is it being opened? Mr R.F. JOHNSON : I very much hope to attend the opening—with, I am sure, my colleague and stalker, the member for Girrawheen.
