I refer to needs for adolescent youth and mental health services, and ask: (a) how many beds are there in the metropolitan health system dedicated to: (i) children’s mental health; and (ii) young adult/adolescent mental health; (b) in regards to question (a), what hospitals are they located at; (c) how many beds are there in the country health system dedicated to: (i) children’s mental health; and (ii) young adult/adolescent mental health; (d) in regards to question (b), what hospitals are they located at; (e) what is the projected number of children and adolescent’s mental health beds required in both the WA Country Health and Metropolitan health system over the next 10 years; (f) how many beds will be dedicated to mental health at the new children’s hospital; (g) will any additional adolescent and children’s mental health beds be located at Fiona Stanley Hospital and Midland Health Campus; and (h) are there plans to expand children and adolescent mental health beds at any other metropolitan and country hospitals, and if so where and which ones?

(a)(i-ii) There are currently 20 acute beds dedicated to children and adolescents who are under the age of 18 years. There are 6 sub-acute beds for young people under the age of 13 years.
(b) 8 acute unauthorised beds at Princess Margaret Hospital - Ward 4H,
12 acute authorised beds at Bentley Adolescent Unit, Bentley Hospital Campus, and
6 sub-acute beds at Pathways Residential, Bentley Hospital Campus
(c)(i) Nil.
(ii) Nil. However, the WA Country Health Service has 59 adult mental health beds for people aged 18 years and over, this includes young adults.
(d) Not applicable.
(e) The requirements for Child and Adolescent mental health beds for the next 10 years are being considered as part of the development of the joint Mental Health Commission and Department of Health's Mental Health Services Plan (the Plan) and the Department of Health's Clinical Services Framework.
The development of the Plan is a key recommendation of the
Review of the admission or referral to and the discharge and transfer practices of public mental health facilities and services in Western Australia
by Professor Bryant Stokes AM 2012.
The first stage of the Plan is due to be provided to Government in December 2013.
