HAKEA PRISON —
FIRES
186. Ms M.J. DAVIES to the Minister for Corrective Services:
A fortnight ago, a 27-year-old man
died in custody following a fire at Hakea Prison, one of nine fires over the
last six months.
(1) Can the minister confirm that
Hakea Prison was 40 per cent understaffed at the time?
(2) Is this understaffing ongoing; and, if so, to what level?
(3) Did the understaffing impact on
the timing of the response to the incident?

The member knows that a death in
custody is subject to coronial inquiry. It would be just wrong to comment on
the sort of questions that the member posed in that environment, so I am not
going to.
