I refer to an article in The Great
Southern Weekender of 23 May regarding a request for specialist cold
weather personal protective clothing to protect State Emergency Service
volunteers conducting search and rescue operations during winter in the great
southern region, particularly around Bluff Knoll and the Stirling Range.
(1) When will this request be
approved?
(2) What is the estimated total cost
of the equipment requested?
(3) How many
requests have been made by SES organisations regarding this specialist cold
weather personal protective clothing in the past 12 months?
(4) Has any funding been allocated to deliver cold
weather personal protective clothing for the Albany SES unit?

On behalf of the Minister for
Environment, I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The
following information has been provided by the Minister for Emergency Services.
(1) Once the requirements are determined, the
Department of Fire and Emergency Services can obtain the clothing solutions
to meet those requirements. Consultation with local volunteers is part of this
ongoing process.
(2) This is unknown until requirements have been
determined and clothing solutions are identified and evaluated.
(3) One formal request has been
received.
(4) No additional
funding has been allocated to the request at this stage. Funding will be
considered once the requirements are determined.
