MR GARY STOKES - EMPLOYMENT STATUS
I refer to the Premier’s inability to provide information to the house yesterday about the employment status of Mr Gary Stokes, a former adviser to Julian Grill and David Parker and current Deputy Director General in the Office of State Development. (1) Has any action been initiated against Mr Stokes following the revelations at the Corruption and Crime Commission? (2) Is Mr Stokes currently in a position to make any decision or ruling on any matters before the Department of Industry and Resources? (3) Does Mr Stokes still have access to confidential or commercially sensitive material? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

I thank the member for the question. Before answering, I welcome the students and staff of Kwinana Senior High School to the public gallery. They are looking forward to their new school, which the government is delivering. I hope it will be an enjoyable experience. (1)-(3) In relation to Mr Stokes, I have the following advice, bearing in mind that he is a deputy director general. Mr Stokes has been released as a witness from the Corruption and Crime Commission. The Director General of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet and the Director General of the Department of Industry and Resources met with Mr Stokes yesterday. They advised that he would be issued with a notice under section 81 of the Public Sector Management Act, alleging a breach of discipline. This will allow him the opportunity to respond, and an investigation will then ensue, in the normal course of events. In the meantime, Mr Stokes will be on leave while that investigation takes place.
