I refer the Premier to the last-minute decision of his Minister for State Development to attend the Australian Football League Grand Final rather than fulfil his ministerial commitment and officially open an important German trade event with His Excellency the German Ambassador, Dr Klaus-Peter Klaiber. I specifically remind the Premier that the minister had accepted the invitation to open the event, that guest invitations had been printed and distributed accordingly and that in the minister’s words this event - Dr G.I. Gallop: This is pathetic. Mr D.F. BARRON-SULLIVAN: Pathetic? The minister stated that this event had the potential to create new commercial ties - Several government members interjected. Mr D.F. BARRON-SULLIVAN: They do not like this! The SPEAKER: Order, members! Mr C.M. Brown: You’ve got no guts. Mr D.F. BARRON-SULLIVAN: These are the minister’s words. He stated that the event had the potential to create new commercial ties between Germany and this State. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Order, members! Mr D.F. BARRON-SULLIVAN: I ask: Does the Premier support his minister’s decision to go to the footy instead of meeting this important and pre-arranged ministerial commitment? This is a ruddy disgrace, minister! Dr G.I. GALLOP

I preface my comments by saying that I am proud of the work of the Minister for State Development. He works extremely hard on behalf of the people of Western Australia. Indeed, we are all proud of his achievements in his portfolio. I know the people who were involved in organising that event. I contacted them after receiving a telephone call from The West Australian, and they indicated that no offence whatsoever had been taken as a result of what happened. Several opposition members interjected. Dr G.I. GALLOP: The inference being drawn was that offence had been taken when it had not. Mr D.F. Barron-Sullivan interjected. Dr G.I. GALLOP: I know him very well; I have had the pleasure of meeting him on a number of occasions and I have expressed our support for relations between Germany and Western Australia. There is no doubt whatsoever that this was indicated by the fact that Hon Kim Chance, the leader of the Labor Party in the Legislative Council of Western Australia, attended the event. We are seeing the Liberal Party in action. Let us ask whether any members of the Liberal Party in this Chamber have accepted invitations to attend the AFL Grand Final over the past couple years. Are there any at all? Mr D.F. Barron-Sullivan: That is not the issue. Dr G.I. GALLOP: Of course - it is not the issue! Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Order, members! Dr G.I. GALLOP: The Minister for State Development supported In Unison 2002 and In Unison 2003. We greatly support the relationship between Germany and Western Australia and we will continue to build that relationship. I know that that is also the view of the German community in Western Australia.

I know that that is also the view of the German community in Western Australia.
Dr G.I. GALLOP: The Minister for State Development supported In Unison 2002 and In Unison 2003. We greatly support the relationship between Germany and Western Australia and we will continue to build that relationship. I know that that is also the view of the German community in Western Australia.
Dr G.I. Dr G.I. GALLOP replied: I preface my comments by saying that I am proud of the work of the Minister for State Development. Dr G.I.
