Attorney General representing the Minister for Police:
I refer to the Custody Notification Service.
(1) Has the minister had any discussions
with the Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, with respect
to CNS; and if so, when?
(2) Has the federal minister indicated that he would support a CNS in
WA?
(3) Has the federal minister indicated that
he would provide funding for a CNS in WA?
(4) Does the Minister for Police support the idea of a custody
notification service?
(5) If yes to (3), will the Minister for
Police accept the funding offer and implement a CNS in WA?
(6) If no to (5), why not?

Criminal Investigation Act 2006 already provides a legal basis for persons in
custody to have access to welfare and legal representation. Across the state,
Western Australia Police are in contact with Aboriginal Legal Service officers
on a regular basis for any Aboriginal person in custody. Federal government funding
of the ALS is a matter between the federal government and the ALS.
