SIR CHARLES GAIRDNER
HOSPITAL — EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
686. Ms L. METTAM to the Minister for Health:
I have a supplementary question. How
can the public have confidence in the minister's ability to manage this
redevelopment when, after four years, it is still a plan and the minister is
unable to announce the number of additional beds or provide the basic details?

AnswerView source ↗

The public will quite rightly judge
us on our record in health. We have a $3.3 billion infrastructure commitment in
health. We have started Geraldton hospital; we have completed Newman hospital.
We have put 800 physical hospital beds in our system across the state. That is
on our infrastructure record. We are delivering the women's and
newborns' hospital. We are absolutely committed to expanding the
infrastructure that our healthcare workers work on. It will have more beds; it
will have more discrete areas for treating patients more appropriately. It will
absolutely support a very busy hospital. That hospital supports one of the
oldest cohorts by age. Many of the patients at Charlies are very elderly and
very frail and have cognitive issues and dementia. The emergency department
will be much better set up to support them. This government has delivered
significantly in infrastructure in Western Australia. We will continue to
deliver significantly in infrastructure.
Ms L. Mettam : But not in
health—in car parks.
Ms A. SANDERSON : Well, what
is the member's priority? Which hospital is she going to build? Is she
going to prioritise Meekatharra or Margaret River? The Nationals want to
prioritise Meekatharra. The member for Vasse wants to prioritise Margaret
River.
The DEPUTY SPEAKER : Order!
Leader of the Liberal Party.
Ms L. Mettam interjected.
Ms A. SANDERSON : How are the
people of Western Australia to decide what the member's priorities are
when she has completely different priorities?
Ms R. Saffioti : When Nick
Goiran tells it to you!
Ms
A. SANDERSON : Okay, yes. We are
still waiting for the priorities to be communicated from the Legislative
Council . We are still waiting for those priorities. We will see from the
state Liberal Party conference what the member's priorities are.
Ms L. Mettam : You sure will!
Ms A. SANDERSON : We will! We
will see what those priorities are! I am looking forward to it. Let us see how
she manages it as leader.
Ms L. Mettam : Much better
than you!
Several members interjected.
The DEPUTY SPEAKER : Order!
Minister for Housing!
Ms A. SANDERSON : At every
test, the Leader of the Liberal Party has failed. She failed this week to call
out rampant discrimination in her own party. We will see her fail again at the
Liberal Party state conference this weekend, and the community will judge for
itself.
