❓ Mr. Redman questions the Minister for Forestry about the McGowan government's support for the forestry industry's long-term sustainability, particularly given Auswest Timbers' sale. The Minister assures that the forest management plan, not the RFA, is key and remains in place until 2023.

FORESTRY — WESTERN
AUSTRALIA REGIONAL FOREST AGREEMENT
216. Mr D.T. REDMAN to the Minister for Forestry:
I have a supplementary question. I assume
that was a yes, and something positive will come out about that. What support
is the McGowan government providing to ensure the long-term sustainability of
the forestry industry in the south west, particularly in light of the
announcement that Auswest Timbers is up for sale?

As I said, I am not going to
pre-empt the announcement from the Premier, but I expect we will get an
announcement reasonably soon. As the member would well know, the Regional
Forest Agreement is only one part of the structure of the industry. The main
structure of the industry is the forest management plan. That runs out in, I think,
2023. That is the agreement that sets out the resources that are available to
the industry. We have committed to maintaining that agreement since coming to
office.
Mr D.T. Redman : Does the
minister support signing the Regional Forest Agreement?
Mr D.J. KELLY : There will be
a new agreement and there will be an announcement of that reasonably soon. I am
the Minister for Forestry; I am not a signatory on that agreement, as the
member well knows. We have committed to maintaining the management plan that is
in place. I am aware that the company the member referred to has put its mill
up for sale. It is still operating and we are hopeful that there will be a new
owner and a successful transition. As the member well knows from his time in
this portfolio, ownership comes and goes, but the resource security agreement
that is paramount to this industry is the forest management plan that is in
place until 2023. It is not the RFA that is the issue, it is the management
agreement, and that is in place for a number of years.
