ROTTNEST ISLAND — GOLF COURSE AND
LODGE
754. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the minister representing the
Minister for Tourism:
(1) Will the
minister provide details of how much the proposed upgrade of the Rottnest
Island golf course will cost in total and provide a breakdown of that cost,
including who will pay?
(2) Will the
Rottnest Island Country Club have a private membership category; and, if so,
how does this fit with the values of Rottnest Island as an A-class reserve for
the use and enjoyment of all members of the public?
(3) Why is a
significant project such as the golf course upgrade going ahead under the ''Expand
recreational activities'' initiative in the ''Rottnest Island
Management Plan 2009–14'' without proper public consultation,
budget provisions and environmental consideration?
(4) With regard to the proposed extension to Rottnest Lodge —
(a) How many additional units are
proposed to be built?
(b) How much additional land will be
required?
(c) Will the extension impact on the
Aboriginal graveyard?
(d) Will
traditional owners and the public generally be consulted about the proposed
extension?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) The tender to upgrade the golf course is
in the marketplace and therefore final costs will not be known until this
process is completed. The work on the golf course will be funded from the
approved Rottnest Island Authority capital works budget.
(2) The preferred proponent for the golf
course lease is Golf Oracle Pty Ltd. Full public access is the intention in
regard to the use of the golf course. Golf Oracle Pty Ltd currently manages the
Maylands and Embleton courses.
(3) The planning to refurbish the golf
course has been undertaken in consultation with the current golf club members
and is a major initiative to improve the visitor experience to the island. This
project does not need to go for public consultation as it is not a new
development. All work is subject to the Rottnest Island Authority's
normal project approval process.
(4) No proposal has
been received by the Rottnest Island Authority.
