PERTH STADIUM — TRAIN STATION —
ARMADALE LINE SHUTDOWN
455. Mr P. ABETZ to the Minister for
Transport:
I note that there has been an
extensive advertising campaign for the upcoming temporary shutdown of the
Armadale train line. Can the minister please outline to the house the shutdown
and why it is required?
Mr D.C. NALDER

I thank the member for
Southern River for the question.
The shutdown will take place from
7.00 pm this Friday, 1 July, through to the last service on Saturday, 9 July.
The shutdown is necessary to allow for works at the new Perth Stadium's
train station at Burswood. All stations between Burswood and Armadale,
including Thornlie, will be closed and they will continue to run from Perth out
to Claisebrook. More than 150 buses have been put onto the network and they
will operate to and from all stations between Armadale and Claisebrook. All
replacement bus stops will be as close to the train stations as possible. We
understand that this will create disruption for people in the communities along
this line and we apologise. We have made every effort to limit closures to
night-time and on weekends; however, to ensure the proper delivery of this
fantastic new train station at Burswood, it is necessary to close the line for
this nine-day period. As I said, we understand nobody likes the disruption and
we apologise for that. Train services will resume on 10 July, at the very first
service.
I will mention just a little bit
about the infrastructure being built. There will be $100 million spent on the
Perth Stadium station and its associated railway infrastructure. It will be $40
million for the station but there will be $60 million for the complex track,
which includes stow roads and overhead infrastructure required to run the trains.
A total of $358 million is being allocated for all transport infrastructure
supporting the new Perth Stadium, which includes new bus bays, a new train
station, a pedestrian bridge and a lot of the paths that run around that
station. This work will create 1 350 jobs directly in Perth, Western Australia,
at a time when construction is quiet, so we think this is a great initiative
for the construction industry and great work for the people of Western Australia.
I look forward to delivering this great project.
