In reference to the Contaminated Sites Act 2003 (the Act): (a) Please detail how many reports of suspected or known contamination have been received for the financial years: (i) 2015-16; (ii) 2016-17; (iii) 2017-18; (iv) 2018-19; (v) 2019-20; (vi) 2020-21; (vii) 2021-22; and (viii) 2022-23 to date; and (b) For (a)(i-viii), please detail for each suspected or known contamination: (i) Site of the contamination; (ii) Type of contamination; (iii) Cause of contamination; (iv) When the contamination was first reported; and (v) Any remediation action(s) taken to date?

(a) Between 1 July 2015 and 23 March 2023, 1,445 reports of known or suspected contaminated sites were received under section 11 or 12 of the Contaminated Sites Act 2003 (CS Act).

(b) I table an extract taken from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation’s (DWER) electronic contaminated sites register on 23 March 2023. The extract shows, for each reported site, the date DWER received the report, the site address, the site’s classification under the CS Act as at 23 March 2023, the date that classification was conferred, and the nature and extent of contamination. [See Tabled paper No. ]
Remediation action has been undertaken at sites classified as decontaminated or remediated for restricted use . Remediation works may be in progress but not yet complete at other sites, however, detailed review of relevant records would be required to confirm this, which is not practicable given the large number of reports requested.
The nature and extent of contamination is only available from DWER’s electronic contaminated sites register for sites that have been classified as one of the seven categories listed in CS Act Schedule 1.
A site may be reported and classified more than once.
