❓ Question seeks a breakdown of WA's landfill waste (5.4 million tonnes in 2009-10) by metropolitan/non-metropolitan areas and waste stream type. The answer provides detailed data for metropolitan areas but relies on estimations for non-metropolitan areas due to lack of direct data collection.

I refer to data showing that almost 5.4 million tonnes of waste was sent to landfill in Western Australia in 2009-10, and I ask how is the total figure broken down into waste sent to metropolitan and non-metropolitan landfill sites, and between the three waste streams (municipal solid waste; construction and demolition waste; and commercial and industrial waste) for metropolitan and non- metropolitan sites?

Quantities of metropolitan waste disposed to landfill are reported to the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) under the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Regulations 2008. Material composition and the waste stream source of metropolitan waste received at landfills are also reported.
DEC does not routinely collect data on the quantity and type of non-metropolitan waste disposed to non-metropolitan landfill. The quoted 5.4 million tonnes of waste sent to landfill includes an estimated 1.9 million tonnes of non-metropolitan waste. This non-metropolitan tonnage was extrapolated from metropolitan landfill data and was based on the ratio of the metropolitan to non-metropolitan Western Australian population. Extrapolations are not extended to provide information on the waste stream source of non-metropolitan waste.
The waste stream source of metropolitan waste disposed to landfill in 2009-10 was as follows:
Construction and demolition
58 per cent
Commercial and industrial
18 per cent
Municipal
24 per cent
