DISABILITY ACCOMMODATION SERVICES —
RESTRUCTURE
614. Hon ADELE FARINA to the Minister for Mental Health:
I refer to the Barnett government's announcement last
week of a restructure of disability accommodation services.
(1) Will the
minister guarantee that every person currently resident in a Disability
Services Commission–run accommodation service who wishes to remain
living in their current accommodation will be able to do so?
(2) If no to
(1), why not?

(1)–(2)
The member would probably be aware that on Friday I put out a press release on
this matter. The press release guaranteed that people would continue to be
provided with accommodation and would continue to get the level of care that
they are getting.
Hon
Stephen Dawson : Can
they stay where they are?
Hon HELEN MORTON : Just a minute. When people are
going through that consultation process, some of them will indicate that they
may wish to move out of the sort of accommodation they are in and move to more
individualised accommodation or something of that nature. That will be
facilitated in this process. For those people who wish to stay in the home they
are currently in, perhaps with the same people that they are currently with
because they build quite strong attachments to them, that will be enabled. But
there will always be some exceptions to that that cannot be managed in exactly
the same way they are now. We do not know what they will be and we do not know
how they will play out. Our intention is to make it possible for everybody who
wants to stay with the group of people they are currently with, and, if it is
possible, to be in the same place they are currently in—that is what
will be made available to them. That cannot be guaranteed across the board at
this stage. It will only be known when those consultations have taken
place.
