BUTANE GAS - SALE TO MINORS - TASK FORCE
I refer to the minister’s announcement on 21 June 2006 of the establishment of a task force to examine the possibility of restricting the sale of butane gas to minors. (1) Who are the members of this task force and when was the task force established? (2) What are the terms of reference for the task force’s review? (3) Has the task force completed its review; and, if yes - (a) what are the task force’s recommendations; (b) has the minister accepted those recommendations and if not, why not? (1) The members of the task force are Terry Murphy, acting executive director, Drug and Alcohol Office - chair; Fiona Lander, acting executive director, Office for Children and Youth; Superintendent Jim Migro, metropolitan regional coordinator, WA Police; Peter Osborn, manager, south east metropolitan community drug service team; Bruno Faletti, manager, WA School Drug Education and Road Aware; Professor Richard Midford, National Drug Research Institute; Angela Rizk, senior education officer, Drug and Alcohol Office - Secretariat; and Kati Donovan, health promotions officer, Drug and Alcohol Office - Secretariat.  The task force was established on 7 July 2006. (2) The terms of reference of the task force are to investigate the prevalence of butane misuse and the incidence of death and injury; investigate the efficacy of a range of strategies to reduce the supply, demand and harm associated with butane misuse, including but not limited to education, legislation and regulation, policing, voluntary retailer schemes, media coverage, product safety and emergency and treatment responses; make recommendations to the Minister for Health regarding appropriate strategies to reduce the supply, demand and harm associated with butane misuse; and provide a report to the Minister for Health outlining the issues arising from the investigations and recommendations for action. (3) No. (4) The review will be completed on 6 October 2006.  The report findings will be made public following consideration by the Minister for Health.
