PERTH GLORY — COMPENSATION — PUBLIC
TRANSPORT AUTHORITY DEBT
680. Ms R. SAFFIOTI to the
Minister for Sport and Recreation:
I refer to the minister's admission in Parliament
today that he knew about the Public Transport Authority debt when he paid out
compensation to Perth Glory.
(1) Did the
minister refuse to take the compensation to cabinet because he knew it would be
offset against the PTA debt?
(2) When did the
minister formally advise the Treasurer about the compensation?

(1)–(2)
While I knew that there were negotiations going on or issues between Perth
Glory and the Department of Transport, I did not involve myself in it, so I was
not aware of the amount. I was not aware of the amount at that time.
Mr B.S. Wyatt interjected.
Mr T.K. WALDRON :
No, I did not take it to cabinet because of that. I had money available, as I
said before; I had potential savings in the budget for nib Stadium, and it was
appropriate to take the money from there. I obviously discussed that with the Premier.
What was the last part of the member's question?
Ms R. Saffioti :
When did you advise the Treasurer about the compensation?
Mr T.K. WALDRON :
The Treasurer was aware; I cannot remember what date I advised him, but I think
everyone in the state was aware. Certainly my colleagues were aware that there
was a compensation payment. In fact, I actually highlighted about a year before
we first started doing the development that this would be coming.
