PEEL HEALTH CAMPUS
421. Mr Z.R.F. KIRKUP to the Minister for Health:
I refer to the health crisis at Peel
Health Campus and the story by Channel Seven's Geof Parry on 6 June
about a patient being treated in a storage area. Why is the minister treating
the people of Mandurah and, more broadly, the people of Western Australia with
contempt by cutting the health budget and failing to properly resource emergency
departments to meet increased demand?

As the member for Dawesville well
knows, there has not been a reduction in hospital funding; there has actually
been an increase of 2.8 per cent this year and about three cent year on year
across the forward estimates. I know that hurts, member for Dawesville, but it
is the truth.
Mr Z.R.F. Kirkup interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Dawesville, you have asked your question; listen to the answer.
Mr R.H. COOK : I remind the
member for Dawesville how much money his government—the government that
he was a senior staffer in—spent on upgrades at Peel Health Campus. How
much? Zero, member for Dawesville. Thank goodness for a McGowan Labor
government. At last we are seeing a significant investment in Peel Health
Campus. I get that the member for Dawesville has gone to the federal member for
Canning and said, ''Mate, you've got to cover my arse. We have
such an appalling record on Peel; I'm taking a bath!''
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Mr R.H. COOK : ''I am
getting a complete basting in the chamber every time I raise the hospital. You've
got to help me, member for Canning. Go and see if we can get some more money so
you can at least cover my arse.'' The McGowan government is spending
more on Peel hospital than any government in the last decade and a half.
The member for Dawesville must have
the same cloth ears as the member for Churchlands. We are suffering from the
biggest and most severe flu season this state has seen since records began in
2001. It is not acceptable that we treat patients on the floor of an ED or that
we treat them in rooms that are not clinically suitable for that, but it is
appropriate that we use ''over census'' rooms in situations in
which an ED, or any treatment area, needs to expand to deal with demand. I repeat:
we have the best ED stats of any state in Australia. Members opposite should be
proud of that. Members opposite should be proud of our doctors and nurses who
have produced the best ED stats in this country. They remain the best despite
the fact that we have this severe flu season. It is time that we acknowledge
the doctors, nurses and support staff on our front lines who have made our EDs
the best in the country. I am proud of the work they do. They are dealing with
the demand from this severe flu season.
