(1) Does the
government intend to introduce a bill or bills this year to amend the Curtin
University of Technology Amendment Act 1996, the Edith Cowan University Act
1984, the Murdoch University Act 1973, the University of Notre Dame Australia
Act 1989 or the University of Western Australia Act 1911?
(2) If yes to (1), for what purpose?
(3) What
correspondence or meetings concerning amendments referred to in (1) have
occurred between —
(a) the minister;
(b) the minister's staff;
(c) the Department of Education
Services; or
(d) any
representative of Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University
or the University of Western Australia?

(1) Yes, subject to cabinet
approval.
(2) The
universities are seeking amendments to their acts to ensure that the
legislative framework reflects contemporary strategic and operational
requirements.
(3) Correspondence
and discussion on the need for amendments has been ongoing and has involved the
state's universities, ministers of the day and their ministerial
office, the Department of Education Services and other relevant government
agencies, including Lands, Planning and Treasury. The Western Australian Higher
Education Council, made up of the five vice-chancellors and chaired by the
Minister for Education, is the peak discussion forum.
