I refer to question without notice No. 429 on 23 April 2015, regarding Rottnest Island, and I ask: (a) has any consideration been given to what the estimated area of a proposed marina of 400 pens would be; (b) if yes to (a), what would be the estimated area, in square metres, of the marina; (c) what environmental issues have been considered by the Rottnest Island Authority in recommending a marina to be built in Thompson Bay; (d) what consideration in particular has been given to potential impacts on currents and the movement of weed and sand in Thompson Bay as a result of building a marina; and (e) is it the Government's understanding that construction material for the proposed marina would most likely need to be shipped from the mainland, and where will this be sourced?

Answer as at 20 May 2015 -
(a-b) No. A 250 pen marina is preferred and its area is estimated to be 2.4 hectares or 24,000 square metres.
(c) The feasibility study included a preliminary environmental assessment, ground truth surveys and a study of the benthic primary producer habitat. The Environmental Protection Authority was consulted in July 2013 and advised an offset would be required for seagrass habitat.
(d) A wave monitoring study provided detailed analysis of wave conditions at the proposed site based on observed data from monitoring devices and historical analysis. The results were applied to the concept design, with advice on protection and breakwater design. Potential impacts on currents and the movement of weed and sand will be the subject of future detailed analysis.
(e) Yes, however the source selection of construction material will be a decision for the marina developer.
