LABOUR MARKET FIGURES
Everyone in this house would be aware of the unprecedented demand for labour across all sectors of our economy. Is the minister able to advise the house of Western Australia’s latest labour market figures? Mr F.M. LOGAN

On behalf of the Minister for Employment Protection in the upper house, I am pleased to inform the house that, once again, Western Australia continues its reign as the jobs capital of Australia with record low unemployment. Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics this morning puts WA’s unemployment rate at 2.8 per cent, the equal lowest rate that WA has ever achieved. The rate of 2.8 per cent was last achieved in March and April last year. That record low is significantly lower than the national average of four per cent and is lower than any other state for the eighth month in a row. Since the Labor government came to power in 2001, more than 207 000 jobs have been created. That equates to a 22.4 per cent increase in the number of people employed. It is important to note that youth unemployment is now at 8.6 per cent. Everyone would remember what the youth employment rate was when Labor came to power in 2001. It was 29.7 per cent. That is a massive achievement by the Carpenter government in building WA.
