BEST BEGINNINGS PROGRAM — ROYALTIES FOR REGIONS FUNDING
I refer to the minister’s comments to the house on 23 September 2009 on the Best Beginnings program. The minister said — If I did have access to more money, I would roll it out in every DCP district across the state. She then spoke of her intention to — … speak to the Leader of the National Party, Brendon Grylls, to ascertain whether some of the royalties for regions funds can be allocated to … sites for the Best Beginnings program. (1) Has the minister asked the Leader of the National Party for money to expand the Best Beginnings program across the state; and, if so, what was his response? (2) If not, when does the minister intend to ask the Leader of the National Party for funds for what are core child protection functions? Hon ROBYN McSWEENEY

I thank the member for the question. (1)-(2) Yes, I put a proposal to Brendon Grylls for royalties for regions funding. It was a very detailed proposal to implement the Best Beginnings program in rural and remote areas. That proposal is still in the mix, but it has gone to another level. We have proposals that go to local government and proposals that go to development commissions and then they go to the chief executive officers of the development commissions, and that is where that proposal is at present.
