I refer to the Rottnest Island Taskforce report released in May 2004. What is being done to place the island on a more financially sustainable footing? Mr M. McGOWAN

I thank the member for the question. As a range of members will know, we are spending up to $20 million on repairing Rottnest after the condition it had been left in when we came to government. As part of that, we are fixing the water supplies, the electricity and other services. We have a program of upgrading the accommodation throughout the island, starting at Longreach and Fays Bay. We also have a program of fixing the accommodation at Geordie Bay, and the 52 refurbished units at Geordie Bay will be opened shortly; in fact, towards the end of this month. I was at Rottnest Island on Saturday, and I was able to announce two new development sites, and open a new tourist attraction for people to climb the lighthouse. One of the two new development sites that I announced is at Mt Herschel. That will be a private sector development. The other is at south Thomson Bay. That will also be a private sector development. We are inviting the private sector to come onto the island and build new accommodation so that the taxpayers will not need to do this. It is all about making the island more financially sustainable into the future. The public of Western Australia is recognising the fact that Rottnest is now better that it has ever been before. The improvements we are making mean that it now has huge occupancy rates. When I was at Rottnest on Saturday, the island was full of very happy and satisfied visitors and tourists. The only exception was one group of people. That was, of course, the love-in that was being held on Rottnest Island! There was only one unhappy group of people on the island. They know that the island is doing well and that is why they went out there, because they know it is a great place to stay. Members of the parliamentary Liberal Party went to Rottnest because they know it is a great place to stay. Members can imagine the love-in: with the members for Dawesville, Vasse, Hillarys and Carine! Can members imagine all the love that was in the room when they were there together. The member for Hillarys was there and naturally the quokkas were a bit concerned - Opposition members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, members! Mr M. McGOWAN : There he was in his telephone booth with his supporters getting ready for the ballot. The member for Dawesville was also in his telephone booth getting ready for the ballot with his supporters. The Leader of the Opposition and the now deputy leader confused it with schoolies week. That is their normal haunt at that time of the year, but they got the wrong week. Rottnest is better than it has ever been before.
