Where there are 'no shows', other patients are used to fill appointments as follows: (a) Patients referred from the Emergency Department fill appointment times resulting from patients not turning up for an ophthalmology (eye clinic) appointment. (b) Endocrinology/diabetic appointments - patients with future appointments are contacted to fill vacant appointments resulting from patients not turning up for a scheduled appointment. In this way, the doctor and nursing resources in the outpatient clinics are used continuously throughout the day. The administrative cost is not absorbed in (a) and (b) as the cost of contacting patients by telephone/letter is incurred for each occasion where a patient does not turn up for a scheduled appointment. All patients who do not attend their scheduled appointment are discussed at end of clinic sessions with the Clinic Consultant. A decision is then made to: · Offer another appointment at the next available clinic. · Refer the patient back to the General Practitioner. · Discharge the patient from the clinic. If the decision is made to refer the patient back to the GP or to discharge the patient from the clinic, a letter of advice is sent to the patient. However, if the patient is a frequent attendee to outpatient department by nature of their illness then a repeat appointment is automatically given, to ensure that patient management is maintained. 2. A total of 15,779 patients did not arrive for their scheduled outpatient clinic appointment during 2005/2006. The following table details the 'no shows' by department.
