At the last election both the Attorney General and the Premier promised the Western Australian public that a Labor Government would extend the three-strikes law to car theft. (1) Does the Government intend honouring this promise? (2) Is legislation to give effect to this promise being drafted; and, if so, when is it due to be completed? (3) When does the Attorney General expect to introduce this legislation into Parliament? (4) What priority will the Attorney General be giving the legislation? Hon NICK GRIFFITHS

I thank the member for some notice of this question. The Attorney General has provided the following response - (1)-(2) The Government indicated that it would look favourably on a legislative amendment to extend the three-strikes law to car theft. However, in the period 1998-99 to 2001-02, there was a 22 per cent reduction in motor vehicle theft. That reduction indicates that crime prevention policies are working in this area. Accordingly, an amendment to the legislation is not on the Government’s legislative program. (3)-(4) Not applicable.
