PREMIER —
INDONESIA VISIT
64. Mr W.J. JOHNSTON to the
Premier:
I have a supplementary question. What does the Premier say
about the conclusions in the Jakarta
Globe , one of the most important English-language papers in Asia, that his
views are a ''backward attitude'' and ''the kind of
leadership that Australia cannot afford to have''?
Dr M.D. Nahan interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Treasurer, I call you to order for the first time.
Mr W.J. JOHNSTON :
Finally, what positive coverage from Asian media can the Premier refer to
regarding his visit to Indonesia?

AnswerView source ↗

For goodness sake! Why don't I give the member for
Cannington a copy of my itinerary of that or any other overseas trip and he
will find that when I travel overseas, I do not stop. If anyone opposite could
ever match the itineraries and the amount of media that I do, please have a go.
Mr W.J. Johnston :
You are kidding me!
Mr C.J. BARNETT : I
have had a look at some of the member for Cannington's travel
itineraries; they are pretty ordinary.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Cannington, I call you to order for the first time.
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : Cruising around North America —
Mr
B.S. Wyatt interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Victoria Park!
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : Cruising around North America, catching up with family
friends, meeting with companies that are campaigning against reform in the
energy industry, I do not think is appropriate. I do not know what Dr Yacinta
is even talking about. I do not know and I have got to say that I do not care
because we had a terrific response in Indonesia, and we have assigned both agriculture
and tourism offices there.
Mr
W.J. Johnston : You say that, yet they say different.
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : Mr Speaker, the people we met with —
Mr
W.J. Johnston interjected.
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : Dr Yacinta —
The
SPEAKER : Member for Cannington, I call you to order for the second time.
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : The meetings I had were with industry and government
ministers. It was a brief visit, it was only a couple of days, but it was the
opening of the new WA trade and industry office, the appointment of agriculture
and tourism specialists, roundtables with the tourism industry, roundtable
meetings with the finance and resources industry and so on. It had been some
time since I had been to Indonesia, so I certainly gained an update in
knowledge, and I appreciated that. I was treated with great courtesy and hosted
with great respect, and, I am sorry, I do not remember Dr Yacinta and I do not
care about Dr Yacinta.
