The Department of Agriculture's agriculture protection budget has been allocated to its six operational regions, plus statewide services. The Northern Rangelands Region includes the Pilbara and Kimberley regions. 1. In 2001/02, the agriculture protection budget allocation to the Northern Rangelands was $2.2 m, dominated by domestic quarantine ($0.62 m), feral donkey control ($0.37 m), declared weed management ($0.31 m) and tuberculosis freedom assurance ($0.25 m). The budget allocation in 2002/03 was also $2.2 m. 2. The dominant expenditure occurs from offices at Kununurra, Derby, Broome and Karratha. 3. The Department of Agriculture's regional management team, working with statewide project managers, ensures delivery of agriculture protection services. The Agriculture Protection Board (APB) with advice from its Zone Control Authorities (previously Regional Advisory Committees) administers the Declared Plant and Animal Control Fund, which includes pastoral rate revenue plus matching Government funding. 4. The programs for 2001/02 have been completed. There are ongoing programs in 2002/03, including increased emphasis on animal health risk management and declared weed management. The application of the majority of programs is on pastoral leases, plus the supply chain for live cattle exports and interstate movements rather than within the towns mentioned above. I trust the information is of assistance to the Hon. Member.
