JUVENILE OFFENDERS - DETENTION
(1) Can the minister confirm that the rate of return to detention for juvenile offenders is about 50 per cent? (2) What proportion of juvenile offenders in custody or on remand over the past 12 months were Aboriginal? (3) Do some parents in remote communities believe that their children are safer and better off in the care of the juvenile custody personnel than in their own communities? I thank Hon Helen Morton for some notice of this question. The Minister for Corrective Services has supplied the following answer - (1) Yes. (2) The percentage is 63.7 per cent. (3) While some parents may be of this opinion, this is not a commonly expressed view from communities. Legislation requires that detention should be considered as an option of last resort, given the effect on young people. ‘ (4) In 2004-05, 29; 2005-06, 25; and 2006-07, 28.
