(b) what action is being taken to prevent a recurrence of the problem?
Unfortunately, transferring the customer load resulted in an overload on one of the feeders (main power lines) out of the Darlington Substation. This, in turn, caused a section of power line to melt and come in contact with the low voltage line below. Regrettably, at the same time, back-up protection at the Darlington Substation also tripped, which resulted in more customers being affected by the power interruption than would ordinarily have been the case. b) Western Power is conducting a review of operating procedures to ensure future feeder overloads due to system switching do not occur. This is expected to be completed and its recommendations implemented by 11 April 2003. Western Power is currently planning an upgrade of sections of power line along the Helena Valley Pump feeder and other main power lines out of Darlington substation.

a) Western Power was undertaking maintenance activities on a transformer at the Sawyers Valley Substation on 21 January 2003. In order for the work to be undertaken safely, the transformer needed to be switched off. To minimise the impact on customers in the area, customers were transferred to a network from the Darlington Substation to prevent them from experiencing a loss of power.
