Barnett questions Premier Gallop's support for Latham's greenhouse policy, suggesting it will harm WA's ability to attract energy-intensive industries. Gallop refutes this, arguing that not ratifying Kyoto disadvantages WA and that dealing with global warming is essential for the future.

Given the Premier’s response and his clear support for Mark Latham’s greenhouse policy - Point of Order Mr E.S. RIPPER: My understanding of the rules governing supplementary questions is that such preambles are not permitted. The SPEAKER: It was hardly a preamble. Questions without Notice Resumed Mr C.J. BARNETT: Given the Premier’s response and support for Mark Latham’s greenhouse Kyoto policy, does he agree that that stand will undermine Western Australia’s opportunity of attracting energy intensive industries and processing? Dr G.I. GALLOP

AnswerView source ↗

No, it will not. Indeed, not only will Western Australia and Australia attract investment, but also all the companies that we are talking about that deal in these investments have their own greenhouse gas protocols. Unlike the Liberal Party in Western Australia, they know what the twenty-first century is all about. I remind the Leader of the Opposition that because Australia is not ratifying the Kyoto Protocol, it cannot participate in any of the mechanisms that are set up to deal with the international implications of it. Does the Leader of the Opposition know what that means? It means that Western Australia and Australia are disadvantaged, because real investment in Western Australia and Australia would result from those mechanisms. The Leader of the Opposition continues to look to the past. He can do that; we will look to the future. We want a better future for our young people, children and grandchildren, which means dealing with global warming. We are looking to the future; the Opposition is locked in the past.
