I refer the Premier to allegations by the Department of Health whistleblower Jean Thornton that the former Minister for Health became “bullying and threatening” towards Ms Thornton during their meeting, as detailed in her letter to the Premier of 1 May. I further refer the Premier to his ministerial statement yesterday in which he stated, “I do not accept that the former Minister for Health had intended to threaten or harass her”, and ask - (1) Can the Premier confirm that he has not sought any advice from any other agency, organisation or person in order to assess the former minister’s intent or behaviour during the meeting? (2) If so, does the Premier concede that he and he alone has made a judgment as to the minister’s behaviour? (3) Does the Premier concede that rather than undertaking a thorough and objective assessment, he has merely ignored the concerns of a whistleblower in the interests of protecting his minister? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1) Yes. (2) Yes. (3) No. The Leader of the Opposition has obviously determined, in carrying out his functions as the Leader of the Opposition of Western Australia, that he will offer abuse on every subject that comes before the people and the Parliament of Western Australia. He is a self-propelling ball of abuse ready to explode at any time. One could say that he is a weapon of perpetual abuse, because that is all he contributes to Western Australian politics. The Leader of the Opposition should have a look at his speeches and his press comments. If he does he will see that all he is contributing to the debate in Western Australia is abuse, abuse and abuse. He never does his homework; he never looks at the facts; he never offers an analysis of the important issues facing the people of Western Australia - he just abuses the Labor Party. I have a lesson for the Leader of the Opposition. If he adopts that approach up to the next election, his party will go nowhere, because many issues in this State require serious analysis and a contribution, and also some bipartisan spirit, which we never get from the Opposition for any legislation that is put forward. I repeat what I said yesterday: first, the questions that were brought to my attention by Ms Jean Thornton were addressed thoroughly and comprehensively, as they deserved to be; and, secondly, I have confidence in the former Minister for Health and now Minister for Tourism. The hypocrisy of the Opposition was revealed to the people of Western Australia today when it put a notice of motion before the Parliament to set up a select committee into this matter. It is incredible that in that motion, which I would think the Opposition would want us to take seriously, it says the first financial year that ought to be looked at in respect of the Western Australian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations is 2000-01. It is interesting. Why would the Opposition not go back before 2000-01? The reason for that is sitting behind the Leader of the Opposition, and he is called the member for Darling Range.
