I refer to a story in the Canning Times of Tuesday, 18 September 2001 titled “Schools and dogs among big winners”, which refers to information provided by the Treasurer, in part, that the Western Australian Greyhound Racing Authority has been allocated $240 000 in the capital works budget for this financial year. The reported response from the chief executive officer of the Greyhound Racing Authority, Mr Ken Norquay, was - . . . the Budget allocation was a “shot out of the blue” and he was delighted with the news. He is also reported as saying - We have projects earmarked for development and this money will certainly come in handy . . . We generally fund our projects from internal funds. I ask - (1) Is the amount allocated to the Greyhound Racing Authority $240 000, as reported in the newspaper, or is it $315 000, as indicated in the budget papers? (2) Why did the authority’s chief executive officer apparently have no knowledge that this allocation would be made, and why does he not know what he will do with it? (3) From where is the money sourced? Hon N.D. GRIFFITHS

(1)-(3) I have no knowledge of the Canning Times article and the comments attributed to Mr Norquay and others. I will read the article and see where the truth of the matter lies. It is true that in part the Western Australian Greyhound Racing Authority budget is self-funded from activities of the authority. However, it receives a substantial amount, particularly from that which goes towards stakes and is allocated from the Totalisator Agency Board. The question is based on a newspaper article that I have not read. I will take the time to read it and investigate the matter further.
