I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question. The following response has been provided by the
Minister for Housing.
(a) Government
Regional Officers' Housing properties are provided to client agencies,
which determine the allocation of properties
to their employees, not the Department of Communities. As at 30 September 2023, there were a total of 1 247 properties
within the GROH portfolio in the Kimberley region, of which 122 are currently vacant and allocated to client agencies
or awaiting occupation of new tenants. There are 26 currently unallocated vacant properties. Over an average 12-month period, up to one-third
of all GROH tenancies may turn over due to normal rotation of staff in regional
locations, agencies rotating staff on fixed-tenure arrangements and staff leave—for
example, maternity leave for regional teachers or police.
(b) The requested
data would require a manual review of files, which is not considered to be a reasonable
use of government resources, considering that houses may be held vacant for
long periods for legitimate operational reasons as outlined above.
