I refer to the very pleasing fact that Western Australia has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation. Will the Premier provide any further demonstration of how Western Australians are benefiting from the strong economic growth our State is currently enjoying? Dr G.I. GALLOP

Under this Government the Western Australian economy is growing strongly, which means, of course, new jobs and opportunities for Western Australians. The Government is proud of the role it is playing in attracting new jobs to Western Australia. That process was clearly demonstrated yesterday with the decision of Raytheon Australia to shift its operations from New South Wales to Western Australia. Therefore, 165 jobs will be created here over the next four to five years. The facility will be built on the technology precinct associated with the marine complex in Henderson. These will be very high technology jobs. The fact they will be located in Western Australia provides an opportunity to lever even more jobs to the defence ship building precinct, which was built based upon work at HMAS Stirling and Henderson, south of Fremantle. These highly paid, highly trained technical positions will go to Western Australians. It is predicted that the 165 jobs directly created will lead to another 400 jobs generally in the WA community. This comes on top of the announcement last week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics that Western Australia has the lowest rate of unemployment of all Australian States. Also, the Minister for Education and Training announced today that a 19 per cent increase has occurred in the number of apprenticeships and traineeships in WA. We are leading the way. As of March this year, 23 325 apprentices and trainees were employed in Western Australia. This State has topped the nation. We are leading the nation through our employment strategies. We are attracting new industry to Western Australia. We are providing new apprenticeships and traineeships for young Western Australians. Our economy is growing strongly, and that means jobs and opportunities for young people in Western Australia. Make no mistake about it; Western Australia is the State of the future. It is the place to be. People can look forward to the future with hope. We are very proud of the work we have done to facilitate those excellent results.
