3. As part of the McGowan Government’s 2021 election campaign, a commitment was made to invest $5.2 million to get 200 additional mature aged apprentices into quality training.
The WA Adult Apprentice Employer Incentive was expected to run for a two-year intake period, with 100 places in 2021-22, and another 100 in 2022-23, with a focus on industries other than building and construction to complement the Construction Training Fund (CTF) Mature Age Wage Gap (MAWG) program. Under the program employers are eligible for an incentive of up to $26,800 when they hire a mature age apprentice aged 21 years or older.
On 5 August 2021, the McGowan Government announced the bringing forward of 100 places from 2022-23 as part of a package of initiatives to put the WA Skills Summit ideas into action.
The Adult Apprentice Incentive builds on the Jobs and Skills WA Employer Incentive introduced on 1 July 2019 to provide financial assistance of up to $8,500 to employers to assist meeting the costs of employing an apprentice or new entrant trainee. The Employer Incentive includes a 50% additional loading on the commencement payment for employers of adult apprentices between 21 and 30 years of age. The Jobs and Skills WA Employer Incentive is ongoing.
In the 2021-22 financial year, a total of $11.0 million in incentives was paid to employers for 2,994 apprenticeships. 824 of these attracted the mature aged/adult apprentice additional loading payment of 50%.
From 1 July 2022 to 29 August 2022, a total of $1.69 million in incentives has been paid to employers for 765 apprenticeships. 223 of these attracted the mature aged/adult apprentice additional loading payment of 50%.
