(1)  Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is available for patients living in Halls Creek with the dialysis being undertaken by the patient in their own home. PD training is provided by the dialysis nurse based in Broome.
All new Kimberley dialysis patients are assessed for their suitability for PD as this is the preferred option. There is currently one PD patient in Halls Creek, and one PD patient in the nearby Balgo community.
Home haemodialysis (HD) is also an option for those Halls Creek patients who have a suitable carer. Should the situation arise whereby a home HD patient's home is not suitable, every effort would be made to accommodate the dialysis at the hospital. This would be considered on a 'case by case' basis. There are currently no home HD patients in Halls Creek either dialysing at home or at the hospital.
(2) The Government will continue to support access to PD and home HD in Halls Creek.
Satellite dialysis services require expensive infrastructure, ability to attract and retain trained experienced staff, and back up support from a hospital with renal expertise. It is not possible to provide this level of infrastructure in small towns.
The areas of greatest need and which can be supported with the required level of expertise are Broome (the site of the current service), Derby and Kununurra. Funding applications are currently under consideration by the State Government for the recurrent funds for the Derby and Kununurra services.
Of the approximately 200 known renal disease patients from the Kimberley region, 8% are from the Halls Creek area.
