METROPOLITAN PASSENGER TRAINS, TRANSIT GUARDS
I refer to the parliamentary secretary’s answer to question without notice 769 asked by me on Wednesday, 14 November 2001. (1) How many of the proposed 235 new transit guards for metropolitan passenger trains have been recruited and trained? (2) How many are now deployed on operational duties on metropolitan passenger trains? (3) How many of the new transit guards recruited and trained were recruited from personnel employed under the previous contract system? (4) Have the proposed 50 transit police been assigned to duties patrolling trains and stations and providing mobile emergency responses; and, if they have not been assigned, when will they commence operations? Following short-listing, it is expected that interviewing of candidates will commence in mid-March and will take about eight weeks to complete. (2) Currently, and until the transit guard initiative is implemented, there are of the order of 110 customer service and security officers, 31 revenue protection services officers, 31 customer service assistants, five Aboriginal liaison officers and 10 trainees deployed on the urban passenger railway network trains and stations. (3) Not applicable. (4) As at 19 February, there are 24 transit police in place and it is expected that the balance of 26 will be in place by July 2002.
