A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Education for the promotion of the Italian language in Western Australia was in place until 2012. A new MOU has been drafted and awaits approval.
Should the Catholic Education Office WA and State public schools decide to continue teaching Italian through insertion programs, they are able to work with the Italo-Australian Welfare and Cultural Centre (IAWCC) to facilitate an ongoing agreement with the Italian government. This agreement is not contingent on Western Australia continuing to fund Italian insertion classes through the Community Languages Program.
The State Government is supportive of an MOU between Western Australia and Italy and is willing to assist with such an agreement.
An estimate of 10 million EURO (approximately $14.5 million AUD) has been granted in the past 10 years to support the promotional programs for the Italian language and culture Australia wide.
