ELIZABETH
QUAY — MEMBER FOR COCKBURN'S COMMENTS
41. Ms E. EVANGEL to the Minister for
Planning:
I was surprised to hear on 6PR this
morning the member for Cockburn denigrate the fantastic design of Elizabeth Quay,
saying, and I quote, according to my notes, ''It makes us look cheap and
trashy''. Can the minister please advise the house what the public
thinks about Elizabeth Quay?
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Thank you! I do not know where she is quoting from; she might have
written it down yesterday, I do not know, but anyway, let the minister answer
the question.

I also was surprised and, in fact,
amazed to learn of the comments made by the member for Cockburn not only on
radio this morning, but also in here last evening when he said that the
Elizabeth Quay development ''reflects trashy boganism''.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Thank you! Member for Churchlands, I call you to order for the first
and second time.
Mr
J.H.D. DAY : We know the opposition hates the Elizabeth Quay project. It has
spent the last four years opposing it and doing everything it can to talk it
down and undermine it. The Leader of the Opposition, the member for Cannington,
the member for West Swan and the member for Cockburn in particular hate the
fact that it has been successful and hate the fact that people love it and are
going there in their thousands every day. They hate the fact that people
actually go and enjoy themselves there.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Girrawheen, I call you to order for the first time.
This is deteriorating.
Mr
J.H.D. DAY : The member for Cockburn, in particular, has insulted the many
architects involved in the design of Elizabeth Quay, and in effect he has
insulted the tens or hundreds of thousands of Western Australians who go there
and actually enjoy the site. He is saying that if you like the Elizabeth Quay
design, you are a bogan.
The lead public realm architect involved
in Elizabeth Quay is ARM Architecture, which is the same architect as the lead
architect for Perth Arena, which was appointed by the previous government.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Let us try again!
Mr
J.H.D. DAY : Just in case the member for Cockburn has not seen the Twitter
comment by ARM Architecture, the tweet reads: ''Fran Logan: glad you
like our @PerthArena. Did you know we designed #ElizabethQuay?'' The
landscape architect was the leading Australian landscape architect Taylor Cullity
Lethlean, and local architecture firms that have been involved in the design of
the food and beverage outlets include CODA Studio from Fremantle and Matthews
& Scavalli Architects from Applecross. I talked to Sally Matthews at the
opening day and also talked to Howard Raggatt from ARM. I would like to see a conversation
between the member for Cockburn and Howard Raggatt sometime! The designer of
the bridge was the Perth engineering and architectural firm Arup, and the
artists involved in the creation of the public art included Western Australian
artists Christian de Vietri, Stuart Green, Jon Tarry —
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Girrawheen, I call you to order for the second time.
Minister, a very quick answer. You have one minute.
Mr
J.H.D. DAY : Other artists included Laurel Nannup, Simon Gauntlett and
Matthew Ngui. The member for Cockburn has made disparaging comments about the
public art that has been provided. The public of Western Australia and visitors
to Perth are voting with their feet. They absolutely love what has been
provided at Elizabeth Quay. As I said, they are going there in their thousands
every day. There have been about 700 000 visits so far and the fact that people
like it is indicated not only by the large number of visits, but also by, for
example, the large number of photographs that have been posted on Instagram—more
than 10 000 photos have been posted by people indicating that they love
Elizabeth Quay, especially the bridge. On Facebook, some of the hundreds of
comments include, according to my notes, ''Love the Quay, great space,
just what we need for Perth''; ''The design is absolutely
fantastic''; and ''So many things to see and great for kids and
families''.
The opposition is indicating again
now that it hates the project, it hates the fact that it has been successful,
and it hates the fact that people are going there and enjoying themselves. The
individual in particular with the bogan problem is the member for Cockburn, as
indicated by some of his crass comments to the media today.
