WETLINE FISHING - JURIEN BAY MEETING
I refer to a meeting at Jurien Bay that was attended by over 100 industry participants and representatives of the Department of Fisheries and the minister’s policy advisor to discuss issues related to wetline fishing. (1) Is the minister aware that at late notice Carpenter government employees pulled out of the meeting and reportedly said that Mr Snook’s chairmanship would politicise the issue? (2) Is the minister aware that Mr Snook consequently joined the audience? (3) Who directed the departmental officers and the minister’s policy advisor to withdraw from the meeting if Mr Snook remained in the chair? (4) On what grounds was that direction made? Hon JON FORD

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(4) Mr Snook’s chairing of the meeting was irrelevant to whether or not my officers attended the meeting. According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Fisheries, Mr Peter Millington, my office was contacted last night by a number of industry people who were concerned about the possible behaviour of some people who were reportedly attending the meeting. The decision of whether those officers should attend the meeting was the CEO’s decision. I support that decision. As a consequence, my officers did not attend the meeting, a fact that is completely irrelevant to Mr Snook chairing the meeting. I was made aware of those comments only half an hour ago when his press release was brought to my attention.
